Discover the '70s at The Carpenters vinyl listening event in Tokyo Feb. 28 | Stripes Japan

For many music lovers in Japan, the 1970s still echo with the unmistakable warmth of Karen Carpenter’s voice drifting through cafés, record shops, and living rooms. Now, that sound will come alive again at a special vinyl listening event in Tokyo on Feb. 28.

Throughout the ’70s, The Carpenters — the sibling duo of Karen and Richard Carpenter — enjoyed enormous popularity across generations in Japan. Their blend of lush arrangements and gentle melancholy resonated deeply with Japanese audiences, helping cement their place as one of the most beloved Western acts of the era.

The duo debuted in 1969 with the album Offering, but it was the 1970 single “(They Long to Be) Close to You” that launched them to global stardom. The song topped the U.S. charts and marked the beginning of a remarkable run that would see the pair sell over 100 million records worldwide and win three Grammy Awards.

Though Karen Carpenter’s sudden passing in 1983 stunned the music world, their songs have never faded. From film soundtracks to television commercials, their melodies continue to find new listeners decades later.

Among those devoted fans is Ken Ogasawara, a Hanamaki native and former graphic designer at Stars and Stripes’ Tokyo headquarters. Ogasawara has spent years carefully collecting original Carpenters vinyl records and memorabilia — a collection so extensive that Japanese media outlets have frequently borrowed pieces for features and broadcasts.

On Feb. 28, Ogasawara will share his treasured archive at “Rediscovering the Carpenters on Vinyl,” held at Nishiogi 3313 Analog Tengoku in Tokyo.

Rather than playing digitally remastered CDs, Ogasawara insists on using original vinyl pressings.

“Perhaps due to the deterioration of the original master tapes, the recently remastered CDs do not have as good acoustic quality as the original vinyl records,” he explained. “I want people to focus on Karen’s singing voice as it was first heard.”

The evening will also feature rare recordings, including early tracks by the Richard Carpenter Trio — a jazz ensemble where Karen originally performed as a drummer — as well as a 1969 solo album by Karen and an early single from 1967 featuring Richard on piano.

For longtime fans and curious newcomers alike, the event promises more than nostalgia. It is a celebration of enduring artistry, careful preservation, and one man’s lifelong devotion to a sound that defined a decade.
