Bonnie Tyler, the unmistakable Welsh voice behind “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero,” died at the age of 75 in a hospital in Portugal on July 8, 2026. Her family and team confirmed that she died unexpectedly while being treated for an illness.
The heartbreaking story began several weeks earlier.
On May 6, 2026, Tyler was admitted to a hospital in Faro, Portugal, for emergency intestinal surgery. Reports described the condition as a perforated intestine. After the operation, she was placed in a medically induced coma in intensive care to aid her recovery.
For a while, there was hope.
In June, her representatives announced that Bonnie had awakened from the medically induced coma. However, she remained very unwell and in intensive care, and doctors warned that her recovery would take time.
Sadly, she never recovered.
Her family later announced that she had died in the Portuguese hospital as a result of the illness she had been receiving treatment for.
So, strictly speaking, the family did not publicly name a specific underlying disease as the sole cause of death. What has been reported is that Bonnie died from complications associated with the serious illness that led to her emergency intestinal surgery and subsequent critical condition.
Her passing brought an extraordinary career to an end.
From “It’s a Heartache” in 1977 to “Total Eclipse of the Heart” in 1983 and “Holding Out for a Hero” in 1984, Tyler created some of the most recognizable songs of the 1970s and 1980s. Her gravelly voice became her trademark and helped make her instantly recognizable around the world.
But behind that powerful voice was a woman who continued performing for decades.
Even in her seventies, Bonnie Tyler was still recording and appearing on stage. Her death therefore came as a devastating shock to fans who had watched her remain active across more than five decades.
