For decades, Dolly Parton maintained one of the most carefully balanced public and private lives in entertainment. Onstage, she was the instantly recognizable superstar with enormous hair, sparkling clothes, a larger-than-life personality, and a voice that made her one of country music’s most enduring icons. Perhaps the most fascinating part of Dolly Parton’s “double life” was therefore not a hidden scandal, secret romance, or mysterious identity. It was her ability to become Dolly Parton for the world while still protecting the woman who existed behind the image. She built an enormous career without surrendering every part of herself to the public.
